Set a visible signal using letter choreography

Are you looking for an idea to set a visible signal which will also be of interest to press photographers? Try letter choreography! The only prerequisite is that you have enough people participating and that you are able to safely move within a registered protest event.

What you need:

  • PC, paper, printer
  • a copy shop nearby
  • large cardboard letters (about size DIN A1), or cardboard and utility knife for the DIY version
  • glue stick

How to:

1   What would you like to communicate?

Brainstorm some slogans to use as part of your choreography.

Advanced version: Think of changing slogans by changing the order of the respective letters.

2   Prepare your print-outs

Write down the slogans letter by letter, each letter full-page of a word processing software document and print them all out.

3   Print as large as possible

Enlarge the prints of your document, up to size DIN A1, if possible.

4   Stabilize your letters with cardboard

Glue each letter to a sheet of cardboard for support.

5   Prepare your performance

Brief your fellow actors for the choreography in advance and rehearse your act so you will be well prepared for your performance!

Tips & tricks:

You are too few participants to form entire sentences? Print out whole words per cardboard sheet and think of fitting recombinations.

BERLIN GEGEN NAZIS – WIR SIND VIELE!

WIR SIND VIELE GEGEN NAZIS!

BERLIN IST GEGEN NAZIS!

MITTE GEGEN NAZIS!

Regarding legal issues:

It is self-evident that your slogans cannot incite violence or contain insults. Be prepared to have the police take a look at your props and slogans.
