The Brandenburg Gate, Reichstag, Pariser Platz: Berlin’s government district is not only a sightseeing destination for visitors, but a centre of attraction for followers of conspiracy ideology, the Reichsbürger-movement and right-wing extremists. During their bizzare-seeming gatherings, they aim to use prestigious and well-known sites in Berlin as a backdrop for their photographs and propaganda.
They spread their ideologies of inequality such as racism and anti-Semitism through Berlin’s city centre and declare all those who do not fit their worldview as their enemies. Also, Berlin serves them as an adverse image, when it is a symbol of a diverse city where a self-determined way of life is possible.
As Berlin’s residents and visitors, we stand united against such a narrative and we say it in many of the world’s languages: Boo! Bou! Boo! Boo! Бу! Ганьба!
Together with cultural institutions, businesses, trade unions, religious and ideological communities, associations and clubs, we are sending a clear signal. Berlin is diverse, open-minded, international, non-conformist, often loud, and at times, exhausting. HOWEVER Berlin is not a backdrop for right-wing extremism, racism, anti-Semitism, and conspiracy ideology!
